CDFAI Fellow

RALPH SAWYER

An independent historical scholar, lecturer, radio commentator, and consultant to command colleges, think tanks, intelligence agencies and international conglomerates, Ralph Sawyer has specialized in Chinese military, technological, and intelligence issues for nearly four decades, much of which have been spent in Taiwan, Korea, Japan, China, and Southeast Asia. Following undergraduate work at M.I.T. in computer engineering and the history of science, graduate study in Chinese studies at Harvard, and advanced language study at the Stanford Center (Taipei) and with Chinese scholars throughout Asia, Sawyer has continued the traditional Chinese practice of public activity and private scholarship over the years. His written works focus on Chinese military history and martial writings while his lectures and consulting emphasize their reformulation for modern contexts, including international business, as well as their integration into contemporary PRC doctrine and the resulting strategic implications.

A Fellow of the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies in Calgary and a Senior Research Fellow with the Warring States Project at the University of Massachusetts, he is a member of numerous professional organizations and a frequent presenter at academic conferences. In addition to articles and archived lectures, his important publications include the Seven Military Classics of Ancient China; Sun-tzu, Art of War; Sun Pin, Military Methods; One Hundred Unorthodox Strategies: Battle and Tactics of Chinese Warfare;  The Tao of Spycraft: Intelligence Theory and Practice in Traditional China;  Fire and Water: Incendiary and Aquatic Warfare in China; The Essence of War ; The Tao of War ; and most recently, the Tao of Deception: Unorthodox Warfare in Historic and Modern China. His writings have been translated into numerous languages, including Russian and Chinese. (Further information may be found at www.RalphSawyer.com.)
